It may not be as regular as clockwork, but it's a pretty safe bet that, every few years a pertussis epidemic will strike Australia.

Just how serious the outbreak will be and how long it will last is anyone's guess. However, recently compiled statistics give plenty of reason to fear the worst. Over the past two decades, the number of cases involved in each outbreak has trended upwards.

In 1991, for example, there were just 349 cases
