Caution urged after France bans Diane-35

Experts have called for more cautious prescribing of contraceptive pills containing cyproterone acetate, after France declared a ban on the drugs due to the risk of blood clots.

The ban on Diane-35 (cyproterone acetate 2mg/ethinylestradiol 35mcg) and its generics was announced Thursday by the French drugs watchdog, which cited a fourfold increased risk of venous thromboembolism in patients taking the drugs compared to non-users.
