Caution urged on macrolides with statins

Caution is needed when prescribing some macrolide antibiotics with statins because of an interaction that may increase the risk of statin side effects in elderly patients, researchers have warned.

Clarithromycin and erythromycin increase the risk of serious statin toxicity and death, particularly in older patients, according to a study using data from 145,000 patients.
