CBT eases hypochondriacs' plight

Counselling for patients with hypochondria can be successfully embedded into hospitals to tackle the large burden of health-related anxiety, research finds.

A UK randomised trial showed significant improvements in symptoms among health-anxious hospital patients who were targeted for special CBT, compared with those receiving usual care.

After one year, health-related anxiety levels had normalised in 14% of patients given counselling, up from just 7%
