Changes to guidelines for managing milk allergies

Rice-protein-based formula is being recommended for the first time in Australian guidelines for the management of cow’s milk allergy in infants and children.

Other recommendations by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) include soy protein formula, extensively hydrolysed formula (EHF) and amino acid-based formula (AAF).

Here is a list of alternative milks to recommend to young patients with cow’s milk allergy along with those to avoid.

Infants under one year

  • Extensively hydrolysed formula (EHF) is usually the formula of first choice; however, some infants will react to EHF, in which case an amino acid-based formula (AAF) is advised.
