Check magnesium levels with PPIs, doctors urged

Doctors should repeatedly test magnesium levels of all patients taking proton pump inhibitors, safety regulators have warned, but the advice has been labelled impractical for GPs.

Citing an association between PPIs and hypomagnesaemia, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has advised for the first time that doctors should consider measuring magnesium levels before starting PPIs, and to repeat testing "periodically" during long-term treatment.
