Akaroa, Christchurch

THE tiny township of Akaroa, which means ‘long harbour’, perches on the edge of Banks Peninsula 85 km from Christchurch. The drive takes about 1.5 hours, but it’s worth stopping at Little River and the Hilltop Lookout, the former for the arts and craft shops and the latter for a panoramic view over the harbour, actually a flooded volcanic crater, to Akaroa.

The South Island’s oldest colonial town and only French settlement, Akaroa is a delightful mix of French and English influences. Immaculately preserved and colourfully painted heritage buildings line
