Chiropractors defend referral rates

Chiropractors have defended their referrals following figures showing Medicare spent $156 million on chiropractor-ordered radiology rebates over the past five years.

The figures sparked fears that some of the scans were ordered unnecessarily because many chiropractors claim misalignments of the spine — what some call vertebral subluxations — prevent the flow of signals that allow the body to heal itself.
