Christmas is the season for giving blood, says GP

Rural GP Dr Olivia Bell (pictured) wants her fellow GPs to consider blood donation over the Christmas season, after blood transfusions saved her life.

The Mid North Coast, NSW, GP was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39 and developed complications that required blood transfusion while undergoing bilateral mastectomy.

“I went into the 10-hour surgery with a haemoglobin of 140, but there were bleeding complications, and by day three post-op my haemoglobin was 42 and the haemorrhage continued.
