Fewer drinks for adults and no alcohol for pregnant women under new draft alcohol guidelines

Just in time for the season of excess, new draft alcohol guidelines have cut the recommended weekly limit by four standard drinks.

In the first update in a decade, draft NHMRC guidelines released on Monday advise sticking to a maximum of 10 standard drinks (10g alcohol per drink, equivalent to 100ml wine) in total a week.

This is a departure from the previous guidelines, set in 2009, which advised "no more than two standard drinks" on any day — or 14 per week.
