Codeine now contraindicated for children under 12

The regulator says to advise patients accordingly

The TGA has issued an alert to warn doctors and pharmacists not to supply prescription or OTC codeine to children.

Following a safety review of Australian and international data, the TGA recommends the following: 

  • Use of codeine in children younger than 12 of age for any indication should be contraindicated.
  • Use of codeine in children aged 12-18 should be contraindicated post-adenotonsillectomy for obstructive sleep apnoea.
