Codeine now contraindicated for children under 12
The TGA has issued an alert to warn doctors and pharmacists not to supply prescription or OTC codeine to children.
Following a safety review of Australian and international data, the TGA recommends the following:
- Use of codeine in children younger than 12 of age for any indication should be contraindicated.
- Use of codeine in children aged 12-18 should be contraindicated post-adenotonsillectomy for obstructive sleep apnoea.
- Existing warnings contraindicating codeine use by breastfeeding mothers should be
