Commercial prenatal screening halves amniocentesis rates

Obstetricians have welcomed a steep decline in the rates of amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling after the introduction of commercial non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPT).

The number of amniocenteses dropped from about 6500 per year to 3600 between 2012 and 2014, and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) numbers dropped from 3300 to 2100, according to MBS data analysed by researchers from ANU and the University of Melbourne.
