Complacency on asthma leads to preventable deaths

An international asthma expert has criticised clinical management of the disease, arguing widespread complacency is leading to preventable deaths.

Dr Mark Levy, head of a UK review of asthma deaths, says his “shocking” findings shows doctors are not treating asthma as a chronic relapsing condition.

“We can’t keep blaming patients for poor asthma control,” says Dr Levy, a keynote speaker at the Connecting Asthma Care conference in Brisbane.

The review shows that in 43% of fatalities, no primary
