Compounders accused of flouting guidelines

An Australian hormone manufacturer has accused the compounding pharmacy industry of flouting industry guidelines.

Michael Buckley, director of WA-based Lawley Pharmaceuticals, claims  compounding of bioidentical hormones has become an “alluring financial beacon”, and many pharmacists have “actively evaded, wilfully misinterpreted or simply ignored” the guidelines in order to supply them.

The Pharmacy Board brought in the enforceable Guidelines on compounding of medicines in April last year in an attempt to minimise the associated risks for patients and pharmacists
