Compounding regulations need tightening

In Australia, pharmacists can mix their own compounds for individual customers only, but public health advocates have complained some pharmacists may be compounding on a commercial scale without the regulatory controls of legitimate commercial pharmaceutical makers.

The TGA has been consulting the industry about compounding chemists since 2008 but the administration said it would soon approach government about the matter. The move comes as US criminal investigators last week searched the premises of a compounding chemist linked to the deaths of 16 people amid a meningitis outbreak.
