Declining vaccination rates against pneumococcal pneumonia has prompted the launch of a public health campaign by the Lung Foundation to tackle the problem.

The move coincides with a call from  UNSW Vaccine and Infection Research Lab (VIRL) researchers, urging governments and doctors to work harder to reinforce the message that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent Streptococcus pneumoniae, responsible for an estimated 20% of pneumonia cases in Australia.
