Concern over ‘substandard’ GPs

University of Auckland health law professor Ron Paterson gave the figure on the sidelines of a Medical Board of Australia revalidation conference where he cited Canadian research suggesting 1.5% of active doctors were substandard, which would equate to 1350 of Australia’s 90,000 doctors.

Asked by MO if this would mean 375 of Australia’s 25,000 GPs were performing poorly, he said, “on the numbers, it looks likely that’s the case”.

But he suggested there may be even more substandard GPs
