One in four GPs had patient information in their bins that could be used for identity fraud, an investigation published on Tuesday revealed.

The "dumpster-diving" survey by a private investigator found three out of 12 randomly selected Sydney general practices had results from pap smears and blood tests, including full names, addresses and Medicare numbers in their bins.
And one out of six Sydney hospitals targeted also had confidential patient information in unsecured bins.
