Criminal checks considered for IMGs
AHPRA’s annual report last week revealed domestic criminal record checks had identified that 2992 medical professionals – out of 52,445 for which checks were completed in 2010–11 – had a criminal record.
Minutes of a recent MBA board meeting highlighted concern among board members that no process was in place to conduct such checks internationally.
“The lack of formal international criminal history checks is a weakness in the system,” the minutes, released by MBA chair Dr Joanna Flynn, read.
“It is desirable to refine international criminal history checking beyond the current declaration-based approach but [the MBA is] aware that all available options involve a number of logistical, practical and procedural issues.”
Dr Flynn said the MBA would seek advice on whether and how to do this without affecting the “continuous development of a flexible, responsive and sustainable workforce
