CVD: time to change focus

Australian GPs are reluctant to use absolute risk to guide their decision-making about cardiovascular disease prevention, despite international guidelines encouraging this approach.

Instead, they favour individual risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels in CVD risk management decision-making especially when prescribing hypertension medication, an Australian study found.
The results suggest medical treatment of lower risk patients (5-year risk of CVD event <15%)
