International medical graduates often struggle to decipher the “grunt language” and slang used by rural Australians, research finds.
The study of GPs working in WA’s Wheatbelt region found language barriers cut both ways, with IMGs and locals each finding it hard to understand the other.
IMGs said the most difficulty arose with patients who spoke quickly, came from interstate, or used lots of Australian vernacular or slang.
