Dispute over fetal alcohol criteria

The chief architect of Australia's new fetal alcohol spectrum disorders guidelines has fended off claims they will lead to overdiagnosis and false labelling.

Released in October, the guidelines have incurred the wrath of a US expert who says they relax the criteria to the point that normal, healthy infants could be diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Under the facial features section of the criteria, doctors can make the diagnosis based on any two of the
