Do you consider yourself a good listener?
Patients get about 11 seconds to explain the reasons for their visit before they are interrupted by their doctors.
At least, that’s the case in the US, where only one in three doctors allows the patient to set the agenda, according to new research.
The results suggest that many clinicians are not practising a patient-centred care model, say the authors who analysed a random sample of 112 videod clinical encounters.
In just over one-third of the encounters, patients were able to put their agendas first, the analysis shows.
