The TGA has recommended that codeine becomes a prescription only medicine, due to ocncenrs over growing levels of misue and addiction.

Under the proposals all codeine products, including many popular over-the-counter cough and cold relief products, will be rescheduled to prescription only from June 2016.
The rescheduling has been was triggered by concerns about increasing misuse and harm with codeine-containing OTC products.
Especially combinations with analgesics such as ibuprofen, leading to gastrointestinal and kidney adverse effects, the TGA said.
