A draft ethics code drawn up by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians says doctors breach their ethical duties by using drug company starter packs.

The draft guidelines on "ethical relationships" between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry argue that starter packs are used by companies primarily as a “marketing exercise”.

"While access to product samples may be argued to serve patient interests in very defined situations, for the most part it compromises the quality use of medicines and works against principles of rational prescribing," the guidelines states.
