Doctors accused of ‘turf’ protection on dispensing issue

Government legislation, presented to parliament last year and currently before the House of Representatives, would allow pharmacists to provide temporary supplies of the contraceptive pill and statin medication to patients at the end of a prescription without a repeat authorisation from the patient's GP.

The AMA has however argued that patients finishing a prescription would be better off missing a week or two of statin medication while waiting for a new script from the GP, an “extraordinary” stance according to Pharmacy
