Doctors can afford rebate freeze, says Plibersek

Doctors earn enough money to bear the Federal Government’s controversial freeze on MBS rebates, Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says.

The November indexation, which usually lifts rebates by about 2%, will be delayed until July next year and is estimated to cost the typical metro GP between $3000 and $4000 annually in the coming years.

But while the move has angered the AMA and the RACGP, both of which are now warning of an impending collapse in bulk-billing rates, Ms Plibersek last week moved to ease tensions,
