Doctors dispute Medicare misuse
Dr Webber, writing in the MJA, argued some general practices were basing business plans on a defined number of Team Care Arrangement (TCA) and GP Management Plan (GPMP) MBS items being claimed each week irrespective of clinical need.
“This is bleeding several hundred million dollars per year as the policy intention is buried by inappropriate claims,” Dr Webber wrote.
AMA Council of General Practice chair Dr Brian Morton said GPs had been forced to use the TCA and GPMP items to allow patients to access allied health services and Dr Webber’s comments “virtually slander the whole of general practice”.
“Those comments come back to anecdotal quotes from practitioners who have been before the PSR and represent a very small percentage of GPs,” Dr Morton said.
“Dr Webber’s ability to comment with authority [based on his time heading the PSR] is questionable.”
