Doctors: value yourselves or you’ll be devalued

Recently the AMA paid the ACCC $7500 to ask permission for GPs to discuss fees among themselves and negotiate with government funded Medicare Locals for after hours GP services.

Since the application of competition law to the professions it is a crime to enter into any ‘unauthorised’ agreement with anyone who could be seen as a competitor concerning fees charged, with the exception of agreements to bulk bill, which is seen to be in the public interest.

Concerns are now being raised that authorisation to ‘agree a fee’ might only be granted to GPs who are AMA members. Non-members will be out
