Don’t call me ‘mate’, nurses told

Health workers in northern NSW have been told not to use terms of affection or endearment following several complaints from patients.

A memo was sent to all Northern NSW Local Health District allied health and community care staff on December 6, to "reinforce...the need for professional language within the workplace at all times".

The memo said it referred specifically "to the utilisation of language that may be perceived as affectionate or endearing with terms such as darling, sweet heart, mate and honey".
