Don't discard the trusty stethoscope: patients rate it highly

Curtin University researchers surveyed 168 patients waiting in WA pharmacies for a prescription to be filled. While they waited patients were shown 10 photos on an iPad of a man in a casual shirt with a neutral expression – some with medical equipment typical of a “general practitioner’s bag”.

Participants rated each photo on “competence, trustworthiness, and goodwill/caring”. Doctors depicted with a stethoscope either as a single item or with other equipment were regarded as “more…honest,
