E-health records privacy may pose health risks

EXPERTS have warned it will be a case of "buyer beware" if patients are given the degree of control over their e-health records recommended by the Australian Privacy Commissioner.

In his recent submission, commissioner  Timothy Pilgrim proposed patients be given the ability to restrict access to the 'shared health summary' and the 'consolidated view' documents that will form the heart of the personally controlled electronic health record system (PCEHR) due to go live from 1 July next year.

The commissioner's proposal gives patients greater control over their record than they would be afforded under the system
