ED figures massaged to boost performance

Almost 12,000 records on ED presentations were manipulated by Canberra Hospital to improve the hospital’s publicly reported performance during the past three years, an audit report reveals.

The revelations come amid increasing criticisms of the so-called ‘four hour’ rule — which means hospitals must prove they have admitted, referred or discharged 90% of ED patients within four hours to get a share of $3.4 billion in Federal Government funding over eight years.
