Eight in 10 GPs prescribe to family

Eight out of 10 GPs prescribe to family and friends despite the practice being a medicolegal minefield, a survey has revealed. 

An Australian Doctor poll of almost 400 doctors has found that 78% prescribe to friends and family, 83% of whom restrict prescribing to treatment for minor conditions or repeat scripts. 

However, two recent cases have led a medical indemnity insurer to remind doctors of the dangers of the practice.
