Elderly must keep moving to live longer

Study refutes the idea that exercise must be done in 10-minute bouts

Light physical activity of any kind can significantly reduce an older person's risk of death, according to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.


It shows that for those aged 70 and over, any movement increases their lifespan.

The observational study of more than 1000 men aged 71 to 92 found there was a 15% reduction in all-cause mortality risk for every thousand steps a day, no matter the intensity.
