Emergency contraceptive under review

The TGA, in conjunction with the New Zealand therapeutic goods regulator MedSafe, is reviewing recent information that suggests levonorgestrel may not be effective for women who weigh more than 70kg.

As previously reported by Pharmacy News, research published by French pharmaceutical company HRA Pharma in November last year indicated that levonorgestrel may not be effective in women who weigh more than 80kg, and that it began to lose effectiveness in those over 75kg.
