End of Blackmores deal welcomed by doctors

DOCTOR and consumer groups have welcomed a decision by Blackmores and the Pharmacy Guild of Australia to scrap a deal that would promote the company’s Companions range of products in GuildCare dispensary software.

Blackmores will also remove the ‘gold cross’ endorsement from its Companions range of complementary medicines after a “strong level of public concern”, while guild president Kos Sclavos apologised for any distress the original agreement had caused pharmacists.

AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton said the public backlash over the deal had been appropriate, as the arrangement “leveraged off the goodwill between the pharmacist and the patient to commercialise a product”.

“There has always been great confidence between GPs and our colleagues in pharmacy, and we congratulate them on the stand they have taken on this issue,” he said.
