Energy drinks bad for the heart

People with cardiac conditions including catecholaminergic arrhythmias, long QT syndrome and angina should be aware of the potential dangers of energy drinks, according to research presented at a major international conference.

Caffeine syndrome, characterised by tachycardia, tremor, anxiety and headache is the most common problem.

But rare and severe adverse events include sudden or unexplained death, arrhythmia and myocardial infarction, says Dr Milou-Daniel
