Exclusive: Poll reveals widespread GP angst over care plans for obesity

Many aren't lodging claims out of fear of breaking the rules

GPs fear falling foul of Medicare if they claim MBS care plan rebates to treat obesity in patients without complications or comorbidities.

The scale of the angst over using the plans to prevent the onset of diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease and other serious complications emerged in an Australian Doctor survey.

More than half of the 275 GPs who took part said they had never lodged a claim because they feared they would be breaking the rules.

A further 15% said they were making claims but worried they were breaking MBS rules.

However, 78% of all GPs believe the care plans are clinically necessary.
