Expert backs pharmacists on early flu vaccinations

Pharmacists are not risking the efficacy of the immunisation program by offering flu vaccinations in March, as long as they are giving them to healthy adults, an immunisation expert says.

The AMA and RACGP have slammed pharmacy chains such as Chemist Warehouse — which has been advertising $11 shots this month — for offering early flu vaccinations, noting that protection may wear off before the end of the flu season.

Yet Professor Robert Booy, who leads clinical research at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, is less
