A DECADE ago, MO’s front page reported on the relatively low incomes of GPs compared to other practitioners: ‘Most GPs earn less per hour than hospital doctors, and some earn less than TAFE teachers, a new survey of GP incomes shows’.

The survey in question was conducted by the Hunter Urban Division in NSW, comparing GP earnings with those of VMOs, specialists, career medical officers and TAFE teachers.

It found no private GP earned the $123 per hour rate earned by VMOs, and “none were even close” to the $139–$149 earned by specialists.
