Fears over untreatable gonorrhoea

The “frightening” levels of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea could see untreatable strains emerge and they’re likely to spread globally, an expert warns.

Professor David Lewis, from South Africa’s National Institute of Communicable Diseases, called for immediate international action to tackle drug resistance in gonorrhoea, which he likened to a “rising tide”.

“We want to say: Go back! Go back! But are we going to be drowning in a sea of gonorrhoea?” he said Tuesday at the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections World Congress
