Fee-gouging surgeons to be exposed

The private health insurer Bupa is to publish the average costs of surgical procedures in Australia so that GPs and patients can identify if a surgeon is charging exorbitant fees.

Bupa says surgical costs vary enormously, with the price of a knee arthroscopy ranging from $674 to $4375, a prostatectomy from $1042 to $5702, a hip replacement from $1317 to $8000, and a selective coronary angiography from $532 to $2104.

The insurer is hopeful that its state-by-state lists of average surgical procedure costs — which will be calculated using claims data
