Fit-to-drive dementia guide needed: expert

Australia needs clear and consistent national guidelines on fitness-to-drive for older people with mild dementia, including six monthly reviews, a neurologist says.

The ageing population will see increasing numbers of elderly drivers with early dementia, and this will create conflicting demands on doctors to weigh their patients' autonomy against responsibility for public safety, said Dr John Carmody, staff specialist neurologist at Wollongong Hospital, NSW.
