The five palliative care drugs you should stock

Community pharmacists should stock five specific drugs if they want to help prevent unnecessary stress and hospital trips for palliative care patients.

That’s the opinion of leading palliative care pharmacist Paul Tait, who says GPs regularly prescribe medications not stocked by community pharmacies.  

“At the end of the day, if someone can’t access medications through community pharmacy they’ve got few other options than to call an ambulance,” says Mr Tait, from the Southern Adelaide Palliative Services.

“Community pharmacies have a great opportunity to reduce the pressure on an already stressed health system by developing strategies so patients can access medicines in their last days of life.”
