Fluoroquinolones cleared of arrhythmia risk

A major study has found no link between fluoroquinolone antibiotics and fatal cardiac arrhythmias despite previous findings that they may cause QT prolongation.

In a review of data from more than two million courses of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, Scandinavian researchers found that the risk of serious cardiac arrhythmias for the oral antibiotics was similar to that of the non- fluoroquinolone antibiotic penicillin V.

The retrospective review of data from Denmark and Sweden examined records for 2.1 million adult patients taking fluoroquinolones and 11 million patients taking penicillin V between 1997 and
