Flying Docs spread their practice wings

The RFDS has had an air base at Charleville since 1943 and delivers clinics at nine locations outside the town but this is the first time it has expanded into traditional general practice in Queensland.

The idea was hatched late last year after Dr Chester Wilson, the last remaining GP in the town, announced he would retire in December 2013, leaving the residents of Charleville and its surrounds with just the local hospital or a four hour drive to the nearest GP in Roma.

The local Murweh Shire Council had purpose-built a GP clinic with a federal grant 10 years ago but it had been unable to attract doctors.

The RFDS approached the local council about running its own GP clinic from the building, employing the doctors whilst taking care of the practice costs, management and offering opportunities for training and participation in clinical
