Former editor takes MJA to workplace tribunal

An FWA spokesperson told MO that the industrial body had “had an application lodged and the matter’s in the process of being dealt with”.

The spokesperson said Dr Katelaris had filed the application against the MJA seeking resolution of a “general protections dispute”.

A general protections dispute, unlike an unfair dismissal claim, involves the part of the Fair Work Act involving “freedom of association” and “protection from discrimination”, according to the explanatory notes posted on the FWA website.
Several high profile medical academics have questioned Dr Katelaris’ departure and have written to the AMA seeking an explanation. The AMA has denied Dr Katelaris’ departure was related to editorial independence.
Dr Katelaris left the publication just days before it reported its highest ever jump in GP readership.
