Gamblers move from pokies to sports betting

The harms of gambling have not declined as some claim, but have shifted to new forms such as online sports betting, Australian figures show.

Financial losses among gamblers are still high for as many as two million Australians, and are equivalent to an average Australian’s spending on health costs, shows the research from the Australian Institute of Family Studies’ gambling research centre in Melbourne.

The researchers note that government policy makers and industry often cite falling participation rates as evidence that gambling safety has improved.
