Genital mutilation sentence to be appealed
THE NSW Director of Public Prosecutions is to appeal the “manifestly inadequate” sentence given to a former South Coast doctor for mutilating the genitals of a female patient.
Former doctor Graeme Reeves was sentenced on 1 July to 3.5 years’ jail after being found guilty of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on patient Carolyn DeWaegeneire.
In 2002, Reeves, who practised obstetrics in Bega without registration, removed Ms DeWaegeneire’s clitoris and labia without her consent while performing surgery to remove a pre-cancerous growth.
